PLANS to improve the standard of sports pitches in Darlington has received the backing of senior councillors.
Darlington Borough Council's director of community services, Mr Cliff Brown, unveiled a playing pitch strategy at last week's cabinet meeting.
It is aimed at identifying current and future provision of pitches in the Darlington area and at considering whether users are happy with the facilities and how they can be improved.
Council officers have received advice from Middlesbrough football club on the latest techniques for maintaining outdoor pitches.
Clubs and officials from the town's football, rugby, cricket and hockey associations were consulted for their views on the facilities available.
The report reveals that it is generally considered that the quality of football pitches in Darlington is below standard because of uneven playing surfaces, poor drainage and inadequate changing facilities.
Hundens Park, which is the town's main venue for football, was highlighted as in need of better changing facilities and maintenance of pitches.
The pitches used in the other three main sports were described as good or high quality.
The council says its strategy will include annual meetings with the town's clubs and organisations for feedback on facilities and continued consultation with national bodies to develop opportunities in Darlington.
