IT was up, up and away as more than 200 balloons were released in Durham's Market Place on Saturday.
Durham University student Simon Unter, who is studying at St Cuthbert's Society, held a balloon race as part of his drive to raise money for the National Deaf Children's Society.
Mr Unter is undertaking a trek across China in September, to help the society's work with deaf youngsters and their families.
He said: "It will be tough going and I have a lot of training to do between now and setting off.
"But I am determined to succeed and raise as much money as possible for deaf children and their families across the UK.''
The trek, which will see him negotiating tough countryside for up to seven hours a day, is one of a series of fundraising events organised by the charity.
Durham City Centre manager Chris Rawlinson, who helped with the balloon launch, said: "Simon is to be congratulated on his efforts to help such a worthwhile cause.
"We are always keen to support activities in the city centre which help to make it a more interesting place for shoppers and tourists.''
