SAFETY-conscious children have been named champions in a borough-wide quiz.

Youngsters from St Mary's RC Primary School, in Grangetown, triumphed in a road safety quiz organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The winning team, made up of Clare Magowan, Kayla Tate, Lauren Clark, John-Paul-Kirton and reserve Paul Noteyoung, was presented with a cup, £200 towards a school road safety project, and a £5 voucher and medal each by councillor Ivy Cole.

Teacher Karen Lowe, who supervised the team during the final, at the James Finegan Hall, Eston, said: "They were fantastic, absolutely marvellous. We were losing until the last round, so it was a thrilling finish."

John Emmerson Batty Primary was runner-up in the contest, being pipped at the post for the second year running, and St Gabriel's RC came third.

The three finalists had won through from 26 schools in the competition, run by the council's road safety officers, Mike Hall and Ron Gomer.
