RECORD-BREAKING Craig Glanville looks set to challenge for the junior boys 400m gold medal at next month's English Schools Championships.

The 16-year-old Washington schoolboy, who set the only new record at this month's Durham Schools Championships - and then went on to run even faster at the Inter-Counties Schools Championships the following week - demonstrated his all-round abilities by setting another new mark in the pentathlon at the weekend.

Glanville, who holds five North-East indoor titles, slashed a huge 156 points off the meeting record at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium when he qualified for the finals of the English Schools Pentathlon Championships.

The Gateshead Harrier led all the way, winning his five events - 80m hurdles (12.4 secs), shot (11.57m), long jump (5.71m), high jump (1.66m) and the 800m (2 mins 3.6 secs).

Glanville totalled 2,962 points, 395 ahead of runner-up and fellow Biddick School pupil Lewis Robson as Durham won the regional team championship ahead of Yorkshire and Humberside to qualify for the national championships at Hull in September.

Glanville, who won the 400m bronze medal in last year's English Schools Championships at Sheffield, will be one of Durham's best hopes for a gold medal as the county takes a full contingent of athletes to Exeter next month.

l Durham City GP Rob Hand added the North-East 10,000m track championship to his 5,000m title at Darlington.

The 39-year-old, who has also held the region's ten mile and half marathon titles, tracked Morpeth Harrier Terry Wall before winning a sprint finish in 31 mins 47.8 secs. Wall, who has beaten Hand by six seconds in the Blaydon Race earlier this month, clocked 31:52.3, while New Marske's'Alan Stimson took third place (31:55.6).

l Norton School pupil Leslie Richards has shot to the top of the UK Under-17 discus rankings with a throw of 49.75m, achieving the qualifying mark for this summer's World Youth Games in Hungary.

l Paula Radcliffe is hoping to exact her revenge on Russian Yelena Zadorozhnaya when they pair meet in Glasgow.

The Russian produced a shock victory over the British middle distance star in Sunday's European Cup in Germany.

Zadorozhnaya ran the 5,000 metres faster than anyone one else this year with a time of 14 minutes 40.47seconds on her first international outing.

But Radcliffe is keen to take advantage of partisan home support to get even when the Britain take on squads from the United States and Russia at Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium on Sunday for the Norwich Union Challenge.

''I knew she was the one to watch,'' Radcliffe said. ''But after the first two laps my legs were dead.

''I might not have backed off enough in training or it might just be the effects of working so hard at altitude.

''It would give me great boost if I could break my personal best over 1500m in Glasgow. The crowd is really close at Scotstoun and there's always an excellent atmosphere.

''I hope they can give me and the rest of the team the extra lift that we'll need if we're going to win.''
