TWO people were killed last night and another person was seriously injured in a four vehicle pile-up on one of the region's most dangerous roads.

A lorry, a Range Rover and two other cars were involved in the collision on the notorious A171 Guisborough to Whitby moors road

The drivers of the lorry and the Range Rover, who both died, had to be cut free from the wreckage.

A passenger in the Range Rover was also seriously injured.

Two other people travelling in two cars also involved in the accident near Lockwood Beck, Guisborough, at about 5.15pm, are believed to have escaped with minor injuries.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said the lorry came to rest on its side.

Both it and the Range Rover were badly damaged and their occupants had to be released using cutting equipment.

Four fire crews, including an emergency tender, and four ambulances responded to the incident.

Earlier this year, police mounted a safety campaign on the A171 to try to cut down the rising toll of accidents.

In the four years to May, there have been 64 collisions on the moors road, in which five people have been killed and 87 injured, 18 seriously.
