A FORMER fell rescuer who has contracted a fatal disease sets off this week on a 300-mile challenge.
David Hainsworth has motor neurone disease (MND) - a condition which will probably prove fatal within five years.
The former member of Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team starts a sponsored wheelchair run, from Richmond to London, on Friday.
He and fellow sufferer Charlie Cowper-Johnson, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, are doing the marathon on behalf of other victims.
"We hope we can raise enough cash for equipment which will help MND suffers to remain in their own homes, where they can be cared for and at least keep some of their dignity," said Mr Hainsworth.
"It's not for me or for Charlie - although one day we may need it - but for others, too ill to look after themselves. We also hope to raise awareness of the disease."
The journey ends at Downing Street in about two weeks' time.
Former Conservative leader William Hague has agreed to help start the marathon, at noon on Friday, in Richmond Market Place.
"We really do need as many people as possible to sponsor us, and we hope we will hear from supporters over the next few days," said Hainsworth.
