A museum and antiques centre in Newcastle city centre is up for sale.

The People's Museum and Antiques Centre in Grainger Street, is home to an impressive collection built up over 25 years.

It has been put on the market with the Newcastle office of Christie & Co, by Angela Rafferty, who has owned the museum for the past five years and the collection for the past 15.

The centre has of 14 specialist shops covering china, clocks and watches, modern and period jewellery, cigarette cards and various other antiques and collectables.

There is also a caf and customer WCs within the museum.

The collection has a value of £250,000. Its button display is the largest in the world and is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The business also received a special award from the Northumbria Tourist Board in 2000 as "An Intriguing Visitor Experience.".

David Lee of Christie & Co's Newcastle office said: "A great deal of time, care and attention has been taken in collating this extensive collection, which is established as a very popular visitor attraction, and there is excellent potential for further development."

The business is held on a 25-year lease with 20 years remaining. Rent payable is £34,000 per annum.

Christie says, on average, there is approximately £1,000 per week of rent collected from the various retailers in the centre.
