A DALES tourist attraction is managing to soldier on despite the crisis in the countryside.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority voted last year to have the Forbidden Corner, near Middleham, shut down after it opened without formal planning consent.
However, a subsequent appeal was successful, and there were plans for expansion this summer as the garden's reputation spread.
A new car park, recommended to help keep disruption on the roads to a minimum, was completed.
However, foot-and-mouth meant the Forbidden Corner remained just that in March and April, and the loss of income could mean a new toilet block and other improvements - including the Cat and Mouse tunnels - may have to wait.
"We only opened on May 9 after the area had been free of outbreaks of foot-and-mouth for three weeks. However, if there are any more in the area, we may have to shut again," said manager, John Reeves.
"The loss of income may mean some improvements are put back, but that also depends on how many people come this summer," he said.
Restrictions mean visitors have to book in advance by telephoning (01969) 640638.
