A MAN who twice attacked another in an early-morning street incident in Harrogate was ordered to pay his victim £100 compensation for his injuries when he appeared before the town's magistrates.

Benjamin Thomas Graham, 19, pleaded guilty to assaulting Earl Wan and was also fined £100 with £55 costs. His not guilty plea to a second charge of using threatening behaviour was accepted.

Rodney Noon, prosecuting, said Mr Wan was with friends in Station Parade, when Graham approached and began to be a pest. He ignored suggestions that he should go home and turned violent.

Graham, of Moorland Road, Harrogate, grabbed Mr Wan in a headlock and punched him twice, smashing his glasses and cutting his nose.

Mr Noon said Graham was pulled off and the group walked away, but he ran after Mr Wan into Cheltenham Parade where he jumped on him and hit him again.

The second attack was seen by police, who arrested Graham.

In mitigation, David Camidge said Graham had sought out Mr Wan later and made his peace with him.

It was his third court appearance in four months, but he was intent on making a fresh start and had got a job working for four months on building a chemical plant in Bedfordshire.
