FORMER Astronomer Royal Sir Arnold Wolfendale has been given an honorary doctorate by Durham University.
A spokesman said: "He served the nation as Astronomer Royal from 1991 to 1995 and, closer to home, he made an enormous impact on the physics department, overseeing its expansion when he was chairman of the department in the 1970s and early 1980s.
"His work in astrophysics has led to numerous honours and he continues to pursue his research as Emeritus Professor in the physics department."
Sir Arnold's contribution to physics also continues with his role as president of the European Physical Society. He was knighted in 1995.
