A Father who admitted killing his 13-week-old daughter after he lost his temper was jailed for four years yesterday.

Tyler Alice Polley suffered "catastrophic" brain injury when Gary Polley snapped while looking after the sick youngster.

He shook the life out of the baby as she cried for attention because she was unwell.

Mr Justice Holland told him: "She needed love, she needed compassion, she needed understanding and quite possibly medical attention. But instead of giving her the benefit of compassion, understanding and love you gave her the benefit of your temper."

Polley, 35, of Alnwick Road, Farringdon, Sunderland, admitted killing the baby after taking care of her on November 10, last year.

But he denied intending to kill or do her serious harm.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how his partner, Caroline Miller, 21, had been settling their two-year-old daughter into bed that evening when Polley killed Tyler.

The court was told that Polley had a short temper.

Tyler was taken to Sunderland General Hospital after Miss Miller and neighbours frantically tried to revive the baby's lifeless body.

But she did not regain consciousness at the hospital despite frantic efforts from staff and was transferred to the intensive care department at Newcastle General Hospital. Her prognosis was described as "hopeless" and she was pronounced dead two days later.

The court heard she had "catastrophic brain injury, most likely the result of shaking", and her body was bruised.
