TWO Guisborough cyclists are looking forward to competing in France during the summer as members of the Limoges-based UCD Nord87 team.

Jonathon Rosenbrier, a 21-year-old former Laurence Jackson school and Prior Pursglove college student, is quickly making a name for himself on the continent as a leading road racer after taking up the sport two years ago.

He has been living in France since March and will be joined by Marcus Smith of the Cleveland Wheelers, who will compete for the next month-and-a-half before returning home to tackle the National Track Championships.

Rosenbrier was an outstanding junior mountain biker and, after claiming third spot in the national junior series, went on to compete for Britain in both the European and World Junior Championships in 1997.

Switching sports in 1999 after a poor mountain bike season the year before, he stunned an experienced field when he won the Four Dales race in Yorkshire early last year. He went on to capture the Cleveland divisional title.

His ultimate goal is to ride in the Tour De France and to achieve this aim he took the brave decision to quit his sports science degree at the University of Teesside.
