A NEW facility to teach people about the countryside was officially opened yesterday.
MEP Dr Barbara O'Toole, helped by children from Ayresome and Rosewood Junior Schools, opened Lingfield Farm Countryside Centre, in Coulby Newham.
Afterwards, adults and children took part in a programme of activities including a storytelling walk and a new animal orienteering course.
The centre is the latest phase in a programme to turn a derelict farm into a multi-purpose facility for the community.
It has been funded by Middlesbrough Borough Council, the Countryside Agency and the European Union, with support from Tees Forest.
Dr O'Toole said: "Training and community activities will be greatly increased by the new centre, and this will help to improve the environment of south Middlesbrough and increase opportunities for those looking for employment in this area."
The main building has been styled on the original farmhouse, and is surrounded by hedges, trees and a pond.
Already being used by the local community, it is expected to attract even more groups with the appointment of two full-time staff members.
