POLICE in Newton Aycliffe are planning a crackdown on the nuisance of off-road motorbiking.
Youths who ride bikes on open spaces in the town are being warned that their behaviour will not be tolerated.
Durham Constabulary has launched an operation involving the force's motorcycle officers and stolen vehicle squad.
Sergeant Paul Unsworth said much of the land used by off-road bikers is close to houses and residents have made numerous complaints about noise and the danger to people walking in the areas concerned.
He said: "Newton Aycliffe has a number of open spaces and is something of an off-road bikers' paradise for that reason. The problem is widespread and residents whose homes are close to the areas concerned are understandably upset by the noise and worried somebody will be injured."
He said: "We suspect some young people are riding around on bikes which have been stolen and are in a dangerous condition, putting themselves at risk in the process. However, the problem is not confined to youngsters. Some older riders who own their machines are being totally irresponsible and using them off-road.
"Not only are these people breaking the law, but also showing a total disregard for local people."
