A TEENAGER who stole a child's bike, and then head-butted a police officer who tried to arrest him, avoided a jail sentence yesterday.
Andrew Moore, 19, of Chipchase Road, Middlesbrough, was ordered to carry out a 100-hour community punishment order and two-year community rehabilitation order.
Michael Bosomworth, prosecuting at Teesside Crown Court, said Moore stole the bike from young boys he knew. Later that day, police officers had gone to his home to ask him about the theft allegation.
There, he said, Moore's father, Clifford became agitated, shouted at the officers and then tried to prevent his son being arrested which he said "seemed to set off" the younger man.
He said Moore then head butted one of the officers, cutting his face, and struggled with them until CS gas had to be used.
Gillian Batts, for Moore, said Moore was a heroin addict, was now battling his addiction and was on a methadone programme
