Darlington have failed in another attempt to sign Sunderland midfielder Neil Wainwright.
The winger, who had a successful loan spell at Feethams two seasons ago, is out of the reckoning at the Stadium of Light.
Quakers enquired about his availability in February, but their current overtures are set to flounder.
Chairman George Reynolds said: "We have tried to get him, but Peter Reid has told us he doesn't want to let him go. He has changed his mind about trying to sell him."
Quakers are working hard on trying to bring in new blood and their chances of making a breakthrough should increase next week when most clubs return to pre-season training.
Manager Gary Bennett is hoping to hold talks with a former Premiership striker in the next few days.
Meanwhile, new signing Neil Maddison is receiving treatment for a minor stomach injury, but he should be ready for the start of pre-season training on Wednesday.
Quakers are looking for a new youth development officer following the departure of Iain Leckie.
* Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe believes he has found the next David O'Leary by appointing Stuart Gray as his new manager.
Gray, who was caretaker boss of the Saints for the final nine games of last season following the departure of Glenn Hoddle to Tottenham, was yesterday given a three-year contract.
Lowe overlooked experienced managers, such as George Graham and Harry Redknapp in favour of maintaining continuity.
