YOUNG canoeists took to the River Tees for a racing regatta on Saturday.
The annual Canoe Orienteering Championships, at Stockton's Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre, was the first of three events organised by Stockton Borough Council in the lead up to the ninth International Canoe Federation Marathon, in August.
Competitors clashed oars in sprint, relay and kayak events, with the emphasis firmly on having fun and gaining experience for the challenge to come.
At the next two regattas, on July 14 and August 4, the spirit of competition will be stepped up. For event details, ring (01642) 676844.
