A SALARY survey of the North-East construction industry has found evidence of pay growth above the rate of inflation for project managers and quantity surveyors.

The survey, carried out by Durham recruitment consultancy Contract Construction Services (CCS), found that project managers aged between 30 and 40 could expect an average pay packet of £33,000 to £38,000 per year.

That compares to an average of £25,000 to £30,000 in the last decade.

Similarly, a quantity surveyor in the 26-30 age group, can expect to earn £25,000 to £30,000, compared to £23,000 in the 1990s.

Joanne Taylor, recruitment manager at CCS, said: "A real skills shortage in the construction sector for qualified engineers, site managers and project managers, means companies have to provide competitive salary packages to attract and retain staff.

"Recent research by the Construction industry Training Board (CITB) shows that 80 per cent of employers in the North-East construction industry have had difficulty recruiting experienced staff so many companies are upping their rate to attract quality candidates."
