STUDENTS will be given a helping hand to acquire skills crucial to revitalising the regional economy.
More than 300 postgraduate students will benefit from paying no tuition fees, and a £2,000 bursary, after Sunderland University was awarded almost £2m in Euro cash.
The funding, which is from the European Social Fund, will also help 120 undergraduates.
University pro-vice chancellor Bob Bell said: "The money will enable students, who would otherwise not be able to undertake training, to learn new skills vital to the future of the North-East's economy."
Jonathan Blackie, of regional development agency One NorthEast, said: "To create an adaptable workforce and a diverse, knowledge-based economy, it is vital that our universities are embedded in the North-East economy.
"This funding will be a great help to Sunderland University, notably for science and engineering, two areas from which the entrepreneurs of the future will come."
