A BRANCH of the Durham Light Infantry says a ceremony to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme was a success.
The Chester-le-Street branch held a wreath-laying ceremony at Chester-le-Street Parish Church, on Sunday, dedicated to the town's men who died at the Somme.
The group has catalogued 179 names of men killed, from Chester-le-Street, Birtley, Pelton, Beamish, Grange Villa, Sacriston, Bournmoor and Fence Houses.
ith 20 members of the Chester-le-Street branch of the DLI Association and 25 army cadets from the town, around 20 local people also turned up for the ceremony.
