ANYONE who thought the music young people listened to was junk could be proved right by a group of primary school pupils.
As part of an imaginative environmental project, 40 pupils of New Penshaw Primary School in Sunderland, have been making musical instruments out of recycled materials.
Organised by WasteWise and funded by County Durham Environmental Trust (Cdent), the course aims to educate as well as entertain, teaching the three Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
WasteWise officer Ruth Clayton, who is working with the pupils said: "The youngsters have been collecting household waste, which we are helping them to transform into guitars, drums and maracas.
"Although it is a lot of fun, the serious message behind this is for children to think before they throw something into the bin.
"Packaging in particular can be reused as a raw material for all sorts of craft, artwork or play, which can be enjoyed over and over again."
WasteWise is working in the school for the next five weeks with one session devoted to the Junk Music project.
