GENERATIONS of pumping raw sewage into the sea off Filey has come to an end with the opening of a £14.5m sewage treatment plant.
John Napier, chairman of Yorkshire Water said the plant, at nearby Muston, boasted the latest technology and ultra violet disinfection. and went far beyond the requirements of European Union and British Government legislation.
He said the disinfection process ensured that 99.9 per cent of all bacteria is removed from the waste water before it is pumped out to sea.
"The discharges are now literally thousands of times cleaner than ever before," said Mr Napier.
He said that since the plant came into operation excellent bathing water results had been recorded by the Environment Agency.
"This is great news for residents and holidaymakers," he said.
The plant was opened by Sir John Harman, chairman of the Environment Agency
