A SEMINAR to promote green burials will take place later this month.
The free seminar, which will bring together representatives from the churches, local burial authorities, funeral services and the public, will take place at County Hall, in Durham City, on Wednesday, July 18.
The event is organised by Durham County Council on behalf of the County Durham Green Funeral Partnership.
It will also include the launch of a new leaflet called Beyond Cardboard Coffins, that looks at funerals, the environment and choice.
About 5,000 leaflets will be produced and will be available from libraries, council offices and funeral directors.
Speakers will include Ken West from Carlisle City Council, who is a national expert on green burials, and Sam Weller, of the Association of Burial Authorities.
Mr Weller said: "All of us have an impact on the environment, even when we die.
"The intention is to empower people to make informed choices about funerals.
"Bereavement is an inevitable fact of life and this is one way of helping people make appropriate decisions about the future."
The seminar will also include a display of different types of coffin, including cardboard, bamboo and woven willow.
Anyone who wants to attend the seminar should call 0191-383 4901 or e-mail LA21Junior Swing Band
