ENGINE manufacturer Cummins acted last night to reassure staff that they are not facing compulsory redundancies.
Cummins, which employs more than 800 in Darlington, County Durham, said earlier this year it was looking for about 30 staff to leave the company voluntarily. Speculation has been growing that compulsory redundancies could also follow later this year.
But this has been denied by Cummins, which admits it has been hit by a downturn in the North American market for trucks and engines.
The Northern Echo understands that six staff left Cummins last Friday of their own accord. A consultation process is taking place in a bid to find more volunteers from among management and shop floor workers.
Last night, Frances Williams, a spokeswoman for Cummins, said: "We don't plan any additional redundancies over and above the 25-30 already identified."
