AN MP is calling for an urgent review of security at a US spy base in North Yorkshire following the ease with which Greenpeace protestors took over the top secret site.
Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, said most people were "staggered" that a group of protestors could have so easily walked into RAF Menwith Hill.
"I think there does need to be a review of security," he said. "Whatever you think of the missile defence proposals, there still remains the fact that any military base has to be secure."
The MP yesterday met the Greenpeace protestors, who said they were amazed at how easy it had been to get into the site, near Harrogate.
More than 100 demonstrators entered the base, earmarked as the European heart of President George W Bush's planned "Son of Star Wars" missile defence system.
On Tuesday, the protestors simply strolled through the gate and others climbed the fences.
More got in yesterday, but all but two had ended their occupation by last night.
