TWO hundred schoolchildren have become better citizens, thanks to an initiative from a football club.
The youngsters were the first to complete the Shining Through project, launched last year by Sunderland AFC with Durham County Council.
They received certificates for their hard work at an awards ceremony at the Stadium of Light, yesterday.
The scheme encourages youngsters in County Durham to make a positive contribution to their communities.
There are several categories of award which recognise personal achievements, the impact pupils have made on the school and community, teamwork, care for others, and a determination to make a difference to other people's lives.
Sunderland chairman Bob Murray said: "All these youngsters have made a wonderful contribution to the community and it is important that this is recognised and rewarded."
Ralph Higgs, of Durham County Council, said: "We are very pleased with the positive support given by schools.
"Not only do the awards celebrate personal achievement, but they also promote the idea of what being a good citizen means."
