DISABLED workers in the region have been given a new voice in the workplace.
The GMB Remploy North branch, which is run entirely by disabled people for disabled people, has been created to represent employees throughout the North-East.
The branch was formed after GMB union members won a battle to save 1,000 jobs in nine Remploy plants, which had been earmarked for closure earlier this year.
Campaigners from the GMB persuaded Remploy not only to reverse its plans, but to introduce new investment into its factories.
The branch president, Ray Kirtley, said: "We are delighted that the new branch has been created.
"Disabled workers need their own voice in the workplace as well as top quality advice and representation. Our branch can provide this.
"The success of our campaign proved beyond doubt the commitment, compassion and understanding of our branch towards disabled employees and their needs."
He added: "We also hope to build links within the community on a wide range of issues, making Remploy North the voice of all disabled people in the North-East."
