Bedale Captain's Weekend - The highlight of the club's year must be Captain's Weekend, and as far as Bedale are concerned, the weekend starts on Friday with Lady Captains day.

Saturday sees the Mixed Foursomes and Junior competition, Sunday is devoted to the captain.

That's how it should run, but this year Friday was in truth a washout. Twice the Ladies tried to play in support of the lady captain, and twice the competition was called off, the ladies having to be rescued from the far side of the course when thunder and lightning and two inches of rain covered the area. The ducks were enjoying the watery conditions on the first fairway!

Thanks to the magnificent work of Ian Pemberton and his greenkeeping staff, Saturday's Mixed competition and Junior competition were able to be played and Sunday's Captains Day was unaffected, except for a few damp places on the fairways.

The lady captain, Marion Willis has now been able to re-arrange her day, which will now take place on Sunday.

Results of Saturday and Sunday competitions as follows - Saturday Mixed Greensomes: 64 Dave Brown and Pauline Morris (19 hcp); 67 Chris Smith & Doreen Bainbridge (13 hcp); 69 Mike Mayman and Kath Tate (19 hcp).

Crook

OTuesday Ben Hawksford, Andrew Baker and Tom Marley will represent the club in the British Heart Foundation regional finals at Fulford Golf Club York. The three members of Crook Golf Club's junior section finished second in the competition at Billingham Golf Club in April where the top three teams qualified for the next stage at Fulford.

Crook entered three teams in this event and raised £611.25 to go to fund vital research into heart disease.

Team One, Ian Swan, Stephen Turnbull and Michael Starr, have also been invited to play at Fulford as one of two teams being highest fund raisers. Between them they raised £388 with special thanks to everyone at the Barbour factory at Crook who sponsored Ian Swan and the Royal Oak, Cornsay who raised over £80 for Michael Starr and Wynn Construction who kindly donated £50.

Harrogate and District Union

Amateur Championship Ogden Trophy

Probably the premier competition in the Union year was played at Knaresborough Golf Club with the course in immaculate condition. The day was highlighted by the performance of Harrogate Golf Club's 18-year-old junior, Joe Buckley, who, in the afternoon round broke the course record by one shot with an excellent 67, followed later by Harrogate Vice-Captain Nell Fegan, who also equalled this record-breaking score.

It is an interesting fact that both players were in the past, members of the Knaresborough Club.

For those with a long memory, in 1982 the competition was won by Colin Montgomerie, who was a member of Ilkley Golf Club before seeking fame and fortune elsewhere.

The top 32 places will go forward to play in a Matchplay competition to he held at Oakdale and Pannal Golf Clubs. While the competition is gross over 36 boles, there is a prize awarded for the best nett score, which went to ten handicapper Alex Carter from the home Club, Knaresborough, who had a score of 133 and will not now be playing to ten handicap as the Standard Scratch for the day for both rounds, was 71.

Top placings - Winner: 138 Joe Buckley (Harrogate), Runner-up 144 - Kevin Ward (Bedale), Third - 145 Neil Fegan (Harrogate), Fourth - 146 Garry Cuthbert (Oakdale).
