AN ODD man out has issued a plea so he can shed the mantle of token male.
Dr John Laws enjoys the company of women: which is just as well, as he is the only man in the residential care apartments at Middleton St George.
But he would not complain if a few more chaps came on the scene - in fact, he would give a small cheer.
Dr Laws, aged 81, from Norton, moved to Middleton Hall last year. He was the first retired man to be attracted to the American-style accommodation. And he's still the only one.
"It is wonderful to have charming female neighbours," he said. "They appreciate my interest in fine wines to a greater extent now, but we would welcome some other men to join our numbers."
Mr Jeremy Walford, managing director, said the second phase of a £1m investment in apartments was well on the way - but the waiting list for that comprised mainly women.
"The ladies would also welcome a better social mix, but they are keen to make it clear they are not hunting for men," he added.
He said the care apartment concept was ideal for retired men. "It allows people to keep their independence and enjoy active lives, safe in the knowledge that all their needs can be met."
Communal facilities include a restaurant, bar and two conservatories. All meals are included as part of the service, but each resident has her - or his - own private entrance.
