THE skies will be filled with creations great and small this weekend when kite enthusiasts descend on the North-East.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the Sunderland International Kite Festival at the Northern Area Playing Fields, in Washington, Wearside, tomorrow and Sunday.
Sunderland City Council kite consultant Malcolm Goodman has travelled the world to bring fresh talent to the city.
Among the experts taking part will be Tokuko Sato, of Japan, who has made her mark on the male-dominated worlds of martial arts and kitemaking.
The festival will have a special focus on Japan, with the fields playing host to a programme of Japanese events, including music, dancing and traditional crafts, celebrating the country's kite-making history.
There will also be a programme of international music, including the group Wamde, who originate from West Africa
