THE committee behind a community newspaper has voted for an investigation into its running.
Shildon Community Press management committee met in the town council offices to hear an auditor's report into The Shildon Record, in County Durham.
A vote was taken to wind up the company and yesterday the receiver was approached. There is no money to pay staff and no paper left to print the newspaper.
Former editor John Smith was not present at the meeting, but said yesterday he was considering starting another newspaper in Shildon.
He said he started The Shildon Record in 1998 with current editor Keith Wallace, and handed it over to the community so funds could be raised to employ disabled people at its printing works.
The Independent town councillor added: "In hindsight, it was a terrible, terrible mistake to give the paper away."
