ONE of the biggest events of the summer at Durham got under way yesterday.
The summer festival, expected to attract thousands of visitors this weekend, will fill the city with music, dancing, craft and gift markets, and entertainment.
Many of the attractions have a continental theme, including Hungarian dancers, French singers and Belgian chocolate makers.
Living history group Regia Anglorum will be camping on Palace Green. There will also be falconry displays, vintage cars and stiltwalkers.
The festival started yesterday, with a pottery fair on Palace Green.
Arthur Bloor, president of the Potter Fairs Branch of the National Market Traders Federation, opened the event.
City centre manager Chris Rawlinson said: "We are expecting thousands of extra visitors for the festival and to help them, the park-and-ride will operate from County Hall, with buses every five minutes on Saturday, and every ten minutes on Sunday."
