The Junior Boys Athletics team from Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough beat off competition from hundreds of other schools to represent the region at the Sky Sports Track and Field National Schools Cup Final at Basildon at the weekend.
At the end of the track events the boys were leading the competition, but the strength of the other 11 schools in the field events meant the team ended the competition in eighth position.
Individual honours went to Scott Allison, who won the 100 metres and Arron Motson, who won the 400 metres. Teammates Scott Dixon and Carl Glass improved their best times in the 1,500 metres and 800 metres respectively.
Physical education teacher Les Thomson said: "The team has done very well to finish eighth nationally in a competition that began with entries from 600 schools."
