England footballer Kieron Dyer was today banned from driving for two months and fined £1,000 for speeding at more than 100mph.

Newcastle wing-back Dyer, 22, exceeded the 70mph speed limit as he listened on the radio to his golfing hero Tiger Woods winning the US Open.

Dyer admitted driving his Mercedes S500 at 104mph along the A1(M) at Leamside, Co Durham, on April 8.

Barry Warburton, defending, told Chester-le-Street magistrates that Dyer's Mercedes was designed for cruising on Germany's autobahns.

Mr Warbuton said: "It is double glazed and it is totally silent, even at the speed Mr Dyer was travelling at, and regrettably his speed drifted up as he went along.

"He was listening to Tiger Woods on the radio in the American Open.

"He is keenly interested in golf and was apprehended just at the time Mr Woods managed to win the American Open."

After the case, Dyer said: "What can I say? I'm a Tiger Woods fan."
