HARTLEPOOL United manager Chris Turner has joined the ever-growing band of managers to be frustrated by the influence of agents, writes Nick Loughlin.

Turner freed nine players at the end of last season and is aiming to bring in three players - a right-back, a forward and a midfielder - to Victoria Park this week.

He was locked in talks with one target over the weekend and hopes to have his new recruits in time for Saturday's opening friendly at Blyth.

But the Pool chief feels his task is being hindered by the stranglehold agents have on players.

"The biggest problem that all managers have is agents getting involved in everything,'' he said. "Players don't listen to advice from people within the game, they listen to their agents instead.

"Players are being guided by them all the time and they cause problems across the board.

"I know people are a bit anxious that we haven't got anyone in yet, but we are getting there. I could have signed three of four players a month ago, but were they really better than what we already had?

"The aim is to bring three or four players in to strengthen the squad across the board. I am looking for experience and people who know the Third Division, not players who will need time to adapt from reserve team football.''

Port Vale midfielder Tommy Widdrington is believed to be one of Turner's targets, but he is also in talks with Colchester.
