AN 18-month programme to refurbish the Ayresome Gardens, in Middlesbrough, has been completed at a cost of £200,000.
The Mayor of Middlesbrough, Councillor Patricia Walker, officially opened the new-look gardens at a gala day at the weekend.
The gardens have a five-a-side ball court, a play area, new footpaths, seats and litter bins.
An imaginative fruit and vegetable sculpture, designed by local artist Andy McKeown and children from Ayresome Junior School, marks the entrance to the gardens.
As part of the work, a large area of the park was given over to schools in Ayresome, who did not have any of their own green space.
The re-opening ceremony was organised by residents and Middlesbrough Borough Council.
There were various entertainments for visitors to the park including a Punch and Judy show and a jazz band.
Councillor Ken Walker, leader of the council, said: "The council and local residents have worked hard to achieve the new Ayresome Gardens.
"The gala day is a tribute to the community spirit in the neighbourhood.
"We must now build on that achievement to strengthen the community. There are exciting plans for more gala days and a Friends of Ayresome Gardens group."
