THE man who commanded British forces during the Gulf War visited the North-East to present the prizes at a school speech day.

Sir Peter de la Billiere attended Durham School for the ceremony on Saturday.

Sir Peter, who was educated at Harrow, was commissioned into the Durham Light Infantry and later served with the Special Air Service.

He was commanding officer of British forces in the Falklands conflict and during the Gulf War.

In his speech, headteacher Neil Kern outlined recent developments and achievements at the school, including last year's A-level results, which were a record for the school.

The day also included a performance by the concert band, a drama presentation and a cricket match.
