POLICE last night released details of a racially-motivated assault in which three Bangladeshi people were injured.
A police spokesman said the four victims were on their way to the Chester Road mosque, in the Royalty area of Sunderland.
They were approached in their car by up to a dozen white men and women who hurled racial abuse at them.
Two of the occupants, a 71-year-old man and 41-year-old man, were pulled from the car and pushed to the ground where they were kicked repeatedly.
A 39-year-old man who emerged from the mosque to help was also attacked.
The three victims were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries, bruising and abrasions.
The attack happened at 11.30pm on Thursday, June 28.
Chief Inspector Dave Hills said: "This was an appalling and completely unprovoked attack on these men who were peacefully attending mosque.
"It was particularly abhorrent as one of those injured was a man of 71.
"There is no doubt this was a racially-motivated attack and we are appealing for help to find those responsible."
One of the attackers was described as very stocky, 5ft 8in, about 20 years old, with short dark brown hair and wearing a blue and white T-shirt.
