The annual Darlington Town Sports Championships took place last week at the Eastbourne Complex - and Carmel School dominated the podium positions.

Year in, year out, the school performs well at this meeting, and this year they took the overall trophy for the tenth consecutive time. But last week's event saw Carmel athletes break ten records and of the 20 trophies available, Carmel took 18.

On a gloriously hot day, a large crowd was in attendance to witness Carmel's dazzling display as they pushed the unfortunate Longfield and Hummersknott into second and third places respectively.

All eight of the town's schools were represented, with over 800 competitors taking part and aside from the ten records broken by Carmel athletes, another seven were smashed by participants from other schools.

Carmel also won all of the 4x100 metre relays.

In writing themselves into the town's record books, Carmel athletes also broke records from their own school. PE teacher Simon Hannaford was delighted with his pupils' performance.

He said: "As well as the ten town records, the Carmel athletes also broke 24 school records, which is amazing if you think of the many wonderful athletes who have represented Carmel over the past 27 years.

"I am so proud of them all.

Head of PE, Eve Hannaford was just as complimentary, saying: "It isn't just about the record breakers it was a team performance with all the Carmel athletes playing their part including the youngsters who attended all the training over the past few months but didn't quite make the team. They were all a credit to the school."

Year 10: 1st Carmel 180, 2nd Longfield 156, 3rd Hummerskott 134.

Girls: 1st Carmel 525, 2nd Longfield 496, 3rd Hurworth 334.

Boys: 1st Carmel 374, 2nd Longfield 319, 3rd Hummersknott 242.

Overall: 1st Carmel 899, 2nd Longfield 815, 3rd Hummersnott 571.
