IT will be the end of an era when a headteacher and some of his colleagues retire after notching up almost 80 years at the same school.
Brian Jones has been the headteacher of St John's Roman Catholic School, Bishop Auckland, since 1984.
After 17 years, the 60-year-old feels it is time stand down. He said: "Technically, I could go on until I am 65, but I am going at a time when I feel I can give a bit more and I am still doing a reasonable job.''
Others to retire from the school are deputy headteacher David Conduct, who has worked there for 17 years, Eileen Kelly, after 15 years, and Eileen Horan, who leaves after 30 years.
Mr Jones said: "The support and the friendship given by parents, staff and governors is very strong. It is like a family.''
Retired life will see him take on a consultancy role, while enjoying his hobbies of photography and watching non-league football.
His successor, Gerard Moran, comes to the school from St Benet Biscop, in Bedlington, Northumberland.
