A NEW housing estate could be built on the site of a former riding centre.
Planners at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council were yesterday asked to approve outline planning permission for a new housing estate of more than 50 properties on the site of the Cleveland Riding Centre on North Skelton Road, North Skelton. The centre has closed for business as the owners have retired.
However, there are concerns that the area is unsuitable for development because of traffic access. The riding school is reached via the A173, one of the busiest roads in East Cleveland, and neighbours are concerned about increased traffic.
Dr Joan Rees, the council's director of development, said she believed the houses are sufficiently set back from the highway for little or no impact to occur and this would not be a reason in itself to refuse planning permission for this development.
The committee was being recommended to approve the scheme.
