A disabled woman was punched in the face by a burglar who stole her shoulder bag.
The woman, in her late 50s, was in her flat in l'Anson Street, Darlington, when she was confronted by the man.
After a struggle in which she was punched in the face, the burglar ran off with the black leather bag, which contained a purse, a small amount of cash, and some tablets.
Detective Constable Jo Slater, of Darlington police, said the woman, who uses a wheelchair because of her disability, was badly shaken and upset although, thankfully, not seriously injured.
She said: "This has made her very afraid to be at home.
"For someone to confront an elderly lady in this way is unusual and we need to catch this man before he does the same again."
The man is about 30, 6ft, of very thin build, with short mousey coloured hair.
He was wearing a grey jacket and dark trousers and is described as being unshaven with a "scruffy" look.
The attack took place between 9am and 9.30am, on Wednesday, at the flats which are off Whessoe Road.
