THERE was a heroes' welcome waiting for a group of Royal Engineers when they returned to their North Yorkshire base from Kosovo yesterday.
But the cheering crowds and the greeting from the Mayor of Ripon was not so much in recognition of their role in the Balkans. It was more to applaud their 1,800-mile trip home - by bicycle.
It took the team 21 days to cross six countries, raising cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
With the marathon journey over, they hope to present the charity with about £2,000.
The team was given a police escort into Ripon. As well as the welcome from Councillor David Harrison, there was a celebration at Claro Barracks, where the cyclists were reunited with their families.
l Donations to Marie Curie Cancer Care are welcome, and anyone wishing to support the team can contact Captain Ruth Lloyd, c/o Marie Curie Cycle Event, 38 Engineer Regiment, Claro Barracks, Ripon HG4 2RD. Cheques should be made payable to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Charity Reg No 207994
