A POLICE officer who stopped a man from jumping off a bridge was among the recipients of bravery awards.
Inspector Steve McWilliams was one of more than 40 officers honoured at a ceremony at Cleveland Police headquarters, in Middlesbrough.
He joined a fire brigade rope team to scale Newport Bridge after attempts to talk down a suicidal man failed.
At one stage, when the man threatened to jump, Insp McWilliams had to restrain him while firefighters fitted a safety harness. The man was detained under the Mental Health Act.
Another Assistant Chief Constable's Commendation recipient was PC David Boumphrey, who tried to save a critically-ill woman at an accident on the A19, last December.
Awards also went to PCs Denis Barry and Kevin Robinson for arresting a man armed with a knife, and PCs Gerard Ironside and Owen Watson, for arresting a mentally-disturbed woman.
Other officers were honoured for their parts in drugs operations, while PCs David McManus and David Walker received Royal Humane Society awards for saving the life of a teenager who had taken a drugs overdose.
