A FARMER has been given a chance to prove that an 18th Century mill on his land should be demolished rather than renovated.
Farmer Jeff Horn wants to demolish the mill at Little Marsh Farm, in Cowpen Bewley, and build a house, as well as converting two barns to make another house.
The mill is a Grade II-listed building, and the plan to demolish it is opposed by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and English Heritage.
Mr Horn's engineer says the building is in a state of collapse, and should be pulled down.
Stockton Borough Council is to ask Mr Horn to demonstrate that renovation is inappropriate before it makes a decision.
