ACTION to improve safety on a North Yorkshire road is on the way.
North Yorkshire County Council has won approval to establish four passing places for slow-moving vehicles on the A61 between Harrogate and Ripon.
The section has been the scene of several fatal accidents in the past 18 months.
The lay-bys will enable slow-moving vehicles to pull off the road and allow a build-up of vehicles to pass safely.
They will be created at South Stainley, Bishop Monkton and an area before Daffodil Bends leading into Ripon.
Improvements have already been completed at the Bishop Monkton junction, Wormald Green and Ripley roundabouts.
Councillor Heather Garnett, who represents an area of the A61, said: "Because it is not possible to overtake in many places, driver frustration has been a key issue.
"I believe the passing places could offer an opportunity to help a free flow of vehicles and avoid that pent-up feeling drivers can get."
Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police have pledeged to work closely with the county council and have backed the latest initiative.
