A DRIVER died after suffering what was believed to be a heart attack at the wheel of his car.
Henry Thomas, 73, of Sunnybrow, near Crook, County Durham, was driving his Vauxhall Vectra along the B6286, in Willington, when the car careered off the road and collided with fencing and a tree.
He was taken to Bishop Auckland General Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.
Mr Thomas had not suffered any visible injuries in the accident, and it is believed he suffered a heart attack moments before the car left the road.
A post-mortem examination due to be carried out today will confirm the cause of death.
Police accident investigators are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened at 9.45am, yesterday, at Hunwick Lane's junction with Cherry Tree Drive.
