HE was a marvellous Magyar who won the hearts of North-Easterners.
Now the son of 1966 world cup Hungarian goalkeeper Josef Gelei, also Josef, has arrived in the region with his own team, in a bid to win a European championship.
The European championships for under-16s are being held at Consett FC's ground.
It's a far cry from the glory of reaching the World Cup quarter-final at Roker Park in 1966, or the 3-1 victory against favourites Brazil at Everton's Goodison Park - matches that made Josef Gelei a national hero in Hungary.
But his son, a coach of Hungarian under-16s Szolnok, and his team of young hopefuls are taking the County Durham tournament seriously.
PC David Scott, one of the police organisers of the tournament, said: "The Hungarians and Russians are up and out at 6.30 every morning. You would be going some to get us, or the Germans, up at that time."
Josef Gelei junior said: "The Brazil game is a legend for us, but the quarter-final game at Sunderland, when we lost 2-1 to the Soviet Union, we tend to forget for some reason.
"This trip to the North-East of England is an altogether happier affair - no matter what the result."
