A NAME and logo have been chosen for Teesside's first city academy.
The academy, which is under construction in east Middlesbrough, will be known as the Unity City Academy.
Its logo, as chosen by children from Langbaurgh and Keldholme Schools, which it will replace, will be three antennae, such as those on circuit boards.
The symbol, which the pupils chose, uses red and blue, the colours of Keldholme and Langbaurgh and represents the partnership between the school, the community and the private sector, which were all involved in developing the Ormesby Road academy.
Excavation and investigation works have already begun on the site between Keldholme and Langbaurgh.
When the academy is completed, by September 2003, it will provide facilities for 1,200 students, as well as being open to the community.
Technology will play an important part in learning, with all pupils and teachers having access to computers and the Internet.
Richard Jenner, whose company Amey is contributing £2m, said: "Plans are progressing well on this exciting project.
"We are already advertising for a principal and will be issuing information to primary schools soon, to help children and their parents make their choice of secondary school," he said.
Over the coming months, a series of roadshows will take place to inform people what the academy will offer.
