A LORRY driver who had to change direction after a heart attack is celebrating after winning a college award.
Fred Grant, 53, of Billingham, was awarded the Principal's Prize at an award ceremony at Durham's Finchale Training College for the disabled.
The award was given for the tremendous progress Mr Grant made on his business administration course.
He said: "After my heart attack I had my licence removed and had to change direction.
"My disability employment advisor suggested that I visit Finchale Training College, and after a six-week taster course I knew that training in business administration was what I wanted to do.
"The college is a brilliant place for disabled people who want to get back to work. It introduces students to all sorts of new skills and helps to rebuild your confidence."
Last year, more than 60 per cent of students found work within six months of completing their training.
College principal Dr David Etheridge said: "This achievement clearly demonstrates Finchale students' high level of drive, commitment and ability.
"As a college, we can help our students to acquire relevant skills in areas where there are employment shortages.
"But then it's down to them to prove themselves and to make a success of their lives.
"This year's students have certainly done just that, and we are really proud of them.''
